18th Century Greek Carnelian Intaglio Ring
An unusual 18th century Greek intaglio ring with a carved octagonal seal dated to 1750. The dark red carnelian stone is bezel set into an octagonal 14K gold signet mount. The bezel has an open back and is attached to grooved shoulders which lead to a smooth and tapering shank.
The stone is engraved in negative, so when pressed against wax, the image would appear in positive. It reads two lines of Greek’ text with a date. This might possibly be the name or initials of an individual and a year of birth or death - alternatively, it could be an abbreviation of a phrase bearing religious sentiment as seen with the cross placed directly above.
UK size S, US size 9.25
The ring weighs 6.09 grams, the carnelian intaglio measures 12mm x 11mm x 4mm, and the band measures 2.5mm across at the back. The ring is unmarked but tests as 14K gold.
