Early 19th Century French Diamond Necklace

Early 19th Century French Diamond Necklace

A fantastic French antique 18K gold and silver drapery necklace with rose cut and table cut diamonds. This necklace is an excellent example of French provincial craftsmanship from the region of Arles, Provence and dates to the early 19th century.

All of the diamonds are set in a crimpled rubover silver settings, typical of the period, and a gold sheet is fixed to the underside for comfort. The belcher chain is crafted in 18K gold and drapes into three layers towards the front. The large hexagonal shaped barrel clasp is beautifully made and engraved with foliate motifs all around.

The elegant drapery shape exemplifies the predominant form worn during the period with areas of both sectioned and interlinked components designed to move, swish and glisten more beautifully in candlelight. The long chain also accommodated the 19th century preference for low necklines, leaving a visual gap to be filled by a statement pendant.

Necklace length : 58cm or 23“

Weight : 16.12g

The central table cut diamond measures 4mm x 2mm. If measured from east to west, the diamond and silver decorations spread 5cm across.

Stamped with French provincial hallmarks, this necklace is a truly gorgeous Georgian era statement piece!
