Victorian Agate and Carnelian Intaglio Pendant
This unusual antique Victorian era 18K rosy gold fob pendant dates to the second half of the 19th century (c.1870), and is stamped with French import marks.
The body of the pendant features three intriguing oval dendritic agate gemstones, with the base of the fob engraved with a decorative floral pattern. The underside is set with a large carnelian intaglio, intricately engraved with the bust of a bearded man wearing a turban. The carved red stone would have been pressed in wax and used as a seal.
The pendant weighs 5.87g and measures 3cm x 2cm. The carnelian intaglio measures 1.7cm x 1.3cm.
The fob is stamped with old French control marks for 18K gold as well as an ‘ET’ mark for ‘étranger’ (the French word for foreign), a mark which was only in use between 1864 to 1893.
