Georgian Carnelian Intaglio Seal Signet Ring
An unusual Georgian intaglio ring with a carved octagonal seal dated to 1788. The bright red stone is bezel set into a later 14K gold signet mount. The bezel has an open back and is attached to trifurcating shoulders which lead to a smooth, D-shaped shank.
The stone is engraved in negative, so when pressed against wax, the image would appear in positive. It reads ‘THM HTPH 1788’. This might possibly be the initials of two individuals and the year they were married - alternatively, it could be an abbreviation of a phrase bearing religious sentiment as seen with the cross placed directly above. THM might even stand for ‘Through Holy Matrimony’ with the two sets of initials of a married couple written underneath.
UK size K 1/2, US size 5.5
The ring weighs 5.32 grams, the carnelian intaglio measures 12mm x 10mm x 3mm and the band measures 2.5mm across at the back.
