Early Islamic Intaglio Signet Ring

Early Islamic Intaglio Signet Ring

The red carnelian intaglio seal is intricately engraved in angular cursive script into naskh which dates the seal to between the 10th and 13th centuries (Porter, 2011). The engraving possibly translates to a name or phrase bearing religious significance.

The oval intaglio with bevelled edges is set within a later silver mount engraved with crosshatched detailing, probably dating to 19th century.

For similar  referenced seals in the British Museum see item (62, 322 and cat. 313) in ‘Arabic and Persian Seals and Amulets in the British Museum’ (Porter, 2011).

UK size T, US size 9.5

The ring weighs 4.41g silver, the stone measures 15mm x 11mm, the ring is unmarked but tests as high-grade silver. There is some solder discolouration to the the ring on the inside and on the shoulder joints.
