Seljuk Dynasty Islamic Garnet Ring
A superb Islamic gold and garnet stirrup ring dating from the 12th century Seljuk Dynasty. The truncated conical bezel is set with a natural pyramidal form garnet stone held in place by 14 wedge-shaped prongs soldered against the outside of the high karat gold bezel.
The exterior of the ring is finely engraved with circles containing swirling bands of trefoils and arabesque motifs. The hollow shank, of semi-circular cross section tapers towards the back.

The Seljuks, a Turkish dynasty of Central Asian nomadic origins, became the new rulers of eastern Islamic lands following the defeat of the powerful Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandanakan (1040). Under the Seljuk sultanate, the region enjoyed a period of material and cultural prosperity.
UK size K/US size 5.25, 2.92g high karat gold tested as 21K. Garnet measures 5mm in diameter. This ring is in good overall condition despite its immense age, the stone is securely set and the front of the ring is in perfect shape whilst the back of the ring is quite dented, which is not unsurprising considering the hollow nature of the shank.
