Spanish Pirate Coin Pendant

Spanish Pirate Coin Pendant

This unique pendant features a genuine Spanish colonial silver "cob" coin, minted in 1748 in PotosĆ, Bolivia—then part of the Spanish Empire. Struck from silver mined in the rich PotosĆ mountain deposits, these cobs were hand-cut to standard weight and roughly hammered between dies. Their irregular shape made them distinct, functional, and historically rich.

The obverse of this 2 Reales coin displays the date 1748 alongside the denomination ā€œ2ā€, while the reverse features the Jerusalem-style cross of Castile and León. These coins were central to Spanish trade and are famously linked to shipwrecks, treasure chests, and the pirate era. Many such pieces were recovered in the 20th century by American salvage divers and transformed into wearable jewellery.

This coin has been mounted in a solid 14K gold pendant setting, likely in the 1970s, and bears both a 14K and "USA" hallmark. The bail is generous, allowing it to be worn on a thick chain (internal diameter of 6mm).

One for lovers of maritime history, numismatics, and swashbuckling tales of the high seas.

Dimensions: 3.2 x 2.5 cm
Coin Diameter: 21 mm
Weight: 10.35 grams
Hallmarks: 14K, USA
Condition: The coin has a small piercing in one corner (historical), otherwise excellent
