Victorian Diamond Cluster Ring
This stunning antique diamond cluster ring was made in France and dates from the mid-19th century, circa 1860.
The ring is crafted in 18K gold and set with a cluster of nine very bright and sparkly old cut diamonds. The diamonds have an approximate total carat weight of 1.3cts, with the largest old cut being in the centre and weighing 0.5cts.
All of the diamonds display excellent clarity and brilliance, with large cutlets, bulging facets and small tables. All the stones are in open-backed settings which allows light to pass through the stones and explains why they all still they glisten so marvellously, as they can be easily cleaned unlike the typical closed-back and foiled settings of the Georgian and Victorian periods which are prone to foil-darkening and dirt building up behind the stone.
The diamonds are mounted in a gorgeousĀ openwork setting designed with foliate motifs and scrollwork. The intricacy and attention to detail of this piece is rather special!
UK size L 1/2, US size 6
The ring weighs 5.42 grams. It is stamped with a French hallmark to indicate it was made from 18K gold in Paris.
The ring remains in fantastic condition despite its significant age; all the stones are still set very securely and there is evidence of a historic resizing at back of shank.
The bezel measures 18mm north to south, the back of the band measures 2mm across.
