Victorian Garnet Coat of Arms Intaglio
A charming antique French late 19th century gold intaglio ring, circa 1890. The intaglio is made from garnet and carved to depict a heraldic family coat of arms with a rampant lion. The background of the shield is vertically shaded to indicate the red tincture or colour of the background known as āgulesā.
The shoulders are decorated with grooves and the open-backed stone is held in position securely in all the cardinal directions.
UK ring size M 1/2, US size 6.5
The ring weighs 7.07 grams. The garnet has been well worn and could do with a surface polish to reveal the glow of the stone, there is also a small chip to one of the corners (price reflects this). The outer band carries a French control mark to indicate 18K gold. The garnet measures 12mm x 10mm and the band has a width of 3mm at the back.
