Vintage Bloodstone Dagger Crest Ring

Vintage Bloodstone Dagger Crest Ring

A charming small vintage gold intaglio pinky ring. It was made by Deakin & Francis Ltd and carries hallmarks for 9K gold, Birmingham and the year 1955 . The bezel is set with a bloodstone intaglio engraved with, in heraldry terms, a ‘cubit arm holding a dagger’. This is a fairly common family crest; most notable as the crest of the Dunlop clan of Scotland, as well as many other families including the Clark, Gordon, Macdonald, Pearce, Rowan, Smith and White families (see below for full list). The ‘crest’ motif forms the uppermost part of a family coat of arms, and it was common to show the family crest alone on smaller pieces of jewellery.

UK size J, US size 4.75

3.18g, intaglio measures 8mm x 7mm. Band measures 3mm wide.

List of families with this crest according to Fairbairn’s Book of Crests of the Families Great Britain and Ireland: Alexander, Aylet, Baines, Berrey, Budge, Campbell, Charteris, Clark, Dalmaboy, Dunlop, Erskine, Finlay, Gallaway, Galloway, Gordon, Gorman, Keith, Loftus, Macdonald, Mackenzie, Neale, Neilson, Noble, Pearce, Pillans, Rolland, Rowan, Scarth, Smith, Stewart , White, Williamson
