Vintage Islamic XL Blue Agate Ring
A remarkable vintage Islamic silver signet ring with a huge 66ct lilac blue chalcedony agate cabochon dating to the second half of the 20th century. The ring is very heavy, weighing an impressive 33 grams and is crafted in .840 silver.
The milky blue agate stone ring, also known as an aqueeq ring or akik ring, are of religious significance as the prophet Muhammad wore one set in silver on his right hand. To this day, many Muslims do the same as it is considered ‘sunnah’ to do so, including both Shia and Sunni clergy.
This magnificent large blue agate specimen was most likely mined in Yemen, the country has been known since ancient times for its agate and incense trade. First recordings of Yemeni agate arriving in Europe date back to 384-322 BC in Aristotle’s writings.
The silver ring is engraved with a decorative crosshatched pattern and the inside of the band is stamped with a master makers mark and Middle Eastern city mark.
UK size S 1/2 , US size 9.25, 33.4g (heavy!)
Agate stone measures 29mm x 23mm x 14mm (estimated weight 65.68ct). We have never seen another aqueeq ring with a stone of this size, truly remarkable.
