Antique French Patriotic Ring

A rare and evocative late 19th to early 20th century French patriotic ring, dating to the period following the Franco-Prussian War, when the city of Metz and the wider region of Alsace-Lorraine were annexed by Germany. Jewellery of this type belongs to the tradition of so-called “Lost Provinces” pieces; discreet yet powerful objects worn as symbols of national identity, hope, and quiet resistance.

Crafted in solid 18K gold, the ring is centred with a shield-shaped bezel bearing the black-and-white coat of arms of Metz, surmounted by a mural crown, the emblem traditionally associated with fortified cities. The heraldic shield is accented with black enamel and engraved diagonally with the word “Espoir” (“Hope”), a poignant reference to the enduring French desire for the region’s return. The shoulders of the band are engraved with the patriotic inscription “Tout Pour La France” (“All for France”), a slogan widely employed in Lorraine and across France during the late 19th century and again during the First World War.
