Antique Garnet Snake Ring

A refined late 19th-century French snake ring, made in Paris circa 1890 and crafted in high-karat 18K gold. A single serpent coils sinuously around the finger, its body looping back on itself in a continuous, fluid line typical of late Victorian symbolism and Parisian goldsmithing.

The snake’s head is subtly modelled and set with a round-cut garnet, positioned as the “brain”, a convention frequently seen in period serpent jewels. The garnet provides a rich point of colour against the warm tone of the gold, enlivening the composition without overwhelming it. The surface of the gold retains a pleasing softness, with gentle wear consistent with age.

Snake jewellery enjoyed particular popularity during the Victorian era, where the motif was associated with eternity, renewal, and enduring affection.

The ring weighs 2.22 grams and is formed entirely in 18K gold. It is sized UK L, US 5.75. The hoop is stamped with a French “tête d’aigle’ (eagle head’ hallmark indicating it was made in Paris, with 18K gold.
