Antique Opal and Diamond Ring
A rare and striking French ring of the late nineteenth century, set with a substantial white opal cabochon and framed by an exceptionally fine pavƩ of rose-cut diamonds. Pieces of this ambition and delicacy are seldom encountered; the mount is light, architectural, and unapologetically luxurious, designed to elevate the opal while allowing light to flood the surrounding stones.
The central opal is a generous cabochon of approximately 5 carats, displaying soft crystalline flashes of green and pink across a luminous white body, with one naturally occurring milky, opaque area. It is held within an elaborate crown-like gallery, the shoulders flaring upwards into tapering, diamond-set ribs that give the ring remarkable vertical presence without heaviness. The effect is theatrical but refined, very much in keeping with French high jewellery of the 1880s.
Around one hundred rose-cut diamonds are set throughout the mount, their irregular facets catching the light with a gentle, silvery sparkle that contrasts beautifully with the opalās shifting colour. Under magnification, a couple of tiny rose cuts are absent, though this is entirely imperceptible to the naked eye and does not detract from the visual impact of the piece.
The ring is crafted in 18K gold and bears the French owl hallmark, confirming its fineness. Overall, it is an exceptionally decorative and uncommon jewel, likely made for evening wear or society use rather than daily wear, and a fine example of the experimental, gem-forward design language of its time.
