Antique Verneuil Ruby and Diamond Ring

Antique Verneuil Ruby and Diamond Ring

A remarkable 19th-century gold ring later set with a vivid 4.5-carat Verneuil flame-fusion ruby. The mount itself dates to around the year 1850 and was likely made in Madras (India) during a period when local goldsmiths were adopting European forms while maintaining traditional techniques. Crafted in high-karat gold and set with rose-cut diamonds in a sculptural openwork design, the ring combines Eastern craftsmanship with Western influence in a way uniquely characteristic of colonial Indian jewellery.

The central stone, now a pinkish-red synthetic ruby, tells the next chapter in its story. In the late 19th century, Parisian chemist Auguste Verneuil succeeded in creating synthetic corundum through the flame-fusion process. Exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition, these lab-grown gems caused a sensation; chemically identical to natural rubies, they were prized for their purity and colour. The ring’s French owl import mark confirms it entered France after 1893, suggesting that the current flame ruby was replaced with the original stone in France, perhaps updated by an owner at the height of the synthetic ruby craze keen to embrace the newest luxury.

Whether the replacement was an act of necessity, fashion or fascination, the result is a jewel that bridges continents and centuries: a mid-19th-century Indian ring revitalised by the technological optimism of the Belle Époque. The buttery 22-K gold mount glows with warmth, its shoulders alive with rose-cut diamonds, while the ruby’s bright pinkish-red colour and lively refraction catch the light beautifully on the hand.

Weight: 8.18g. Stone: 13 × 10 × 4 mm. Ring size: UK Q / US 8. Mark: French owl import for gold (post-1893). Excellent condition with minor wear and two small diamond replacements, consistent with age and history.

A rare jewel of cross-cultural craftsmanship - born in India, transformed in France, and still radiant over a century later.
