Italian Rock Crystal Cluster Ring

A rare antique Italian cluster ring, dating from around 1800, set with foiled and faceted rock crystal gemstones in high karat gold.

The ring features a raised navette-shaped bezel, centred with a large oval rose-cut rock crystal measuring 8 x 7 mm. This is framed by eight smaller rose cuts, and flanked on either side by striking triangular faceted stones, all mounted in closed-back settings over silver foil to enhance their brilliance. The result is a luminous effect that imitates the sparkle of diamonds.

Crafted in 18K gold, the ring displays the traditional style popular in Rome during the early 19th century. The reverse of the bezel is finished with a beautifully scalloped shell motif—an iconic detail of Italian goldsmithing from the period.

Rings of this type are well documented in museum collections, including examples in the British Museum (AF.2169 and AF.2190) and the Victoria & Albert Museum (471-1868, 488-1868, 441-1868), many of which are attributed to the Castellani family collection (see final image for reference).

It measures 22 x 15 mm across the head and is a UK size Q (US size 8). The ring is unmarked but tests as 18K gold. In particularly good condition for a piece of this age, with all stones securely set.
