Victorian Garnet Snake Ring

Victorian Garnet Snake Ring

A striking antique gold snake ring, crafted in Chester in 1920 by the Lewis Brothers (L. Bros Ltd). The design features two intertwined and coiled snakes, their heads set with pear-shaped garnets that represent the "brains" of these symbolic creatures.

Snake motifs were particularly popular in Victorian jewellery, symbolising eternal love, wisdom, and rebirth. This fascination was inspired by Prince Albert’s gift of a snake engagement ring to Queen Victoria, which made the motif a beloved symbol of devotion during her reign.

Crafted in solid 9K gold with a slightly rosy tint characteristic of the period, the ring weighs 5.96 grams. It measures 4 mm wide at the back and 1 cm north to south at the front. Fully hallmarked with hard-to-find ‘Chester’ city British stamps (the assay office closed in 1962).

The ring is a UK size T (US size 9.5). Together, the garnets total approximately 0.5 carats.

In very good and wearable condition, this piece retains its charm and historic significance, with minor signs of age commensurate with its over 100 years of history. A timeless piece, it is perfect for collectors and those seeking a meaningful antique treasure.
