Victorian Scottish Intaglio Ring

Victorian Scottish Intaglio Ring

A striking Victorian gold ring dating to around 1870, conceived as a bold expression of Scottish identity and patriotism.

The ring is centred with a shielded orange agate intaglio, most likely of Scottish origin, engraved in reverse with the phrase ā€œDinna Forgetā€, intended for use as a seal so that the inscription appears correctly when impressed. The phrase is a Scots expression meaning ā€œdo not forgetā€ and was commonly associated with remembrance of homeland, family, loyalty, and tradition.

At the centre of the inscription is a finely engraved thistle, the national emblem of Scotland, symbolising resilience, protection, and endurance. The intaglio is set within an 18K gold mount hand-carved with two opposing lions, powerful symbols in Scottish heraldry representing strength, guardianship, and sovereignty. Each lion is detailed with tiny rose cut sapphire eyes.

The ring weighs 9.5 grams and tests as 18K gold. The intaglio measures 1 x 1 cm and the ring has a depth of approximately 7mm. Ring size is UK U, equivalent to US 10.Ā

The ring is in good condition despite its significant age. Fine hairline cracks are present to the interior back of the shank but do not affect stability or wear.

This is a highly evocative piece of Victorian jewellery, worn as both a personal seal and a proud declaration of Scottish heritage.
