Victorian Topaz and Diamond Ring

Victorian Topaz and Diamond Ring

A superb antique topaz and diamond cluster ring dating from the late 19th century, circa 1890. The 2.2ct faceted light yellow topaz sits majestically in a gold rubover mount. It is surrounded vertically by old cut diamonds, each 0.25cts in weight, claw-set in platinum. Two smaller rose cut diamonds fill the gaps on each side. All the stones are in open-backed settings which explains why they all still they glisten so marvellously as they can be easily cleaned unlike the typical closed-back and foiled settings of the Georgian and Victorian periods which are prone to foil-darkening and dirt building up behind the stone.Ā

The ring is unmarked but tests as 21K yellow gold. The bezel is attached to a smooth D-shaped tapering band with pinched shoulders. The gorgeous ring sits flat on the finger to allow for frequent wear and it remains in good overall condition despite its significant age with all the stones are securely set. Upon loupe magnification, there are some light abrasions to the facet junctions of the topaz, commensurate with age.Ā

UK ring size M 1/2, US size 6.5

The ring weighs 4.5 grams, the head measures 20mm x 8mm on its longest axes.Ā

This gorgeous and unusual late Victorian era ring would be a great addition to any collection, but would also make an excellent antique engagement ring!
