Antique Egyptian Revival Scarab Ring

A beautiful and early example of 19th-century Egyptian revival jewellery, this scarab ring captures the fascination with Ancient Egypt that swept through Europe in the mid to late 1800s. Crafted around 1860-70 in rich 18-karat gold, the ring features a finely carved dark green scarab - likely steatite or glazed composition - mounted within a fully revolving bezel, true to the ancient prototypes that inspired it.

The goldwork is exquisite: wire-wrapped shoulders and textured detailing faithfully echo the forms of ancient Egyptian jewellery, while the scarab itself bears incised hieroglyphic-style markings to the reverse. As in antiquity, the scarab is set to swivel, a feature that reflects its dual function as both amulet and seal.

The design draws on the mid-19th-century revival of Egyptian art, which flourished following Auguste Mariette’s 1859 discovery of Queen Aahhotep’s tomb and its extraordinary gold jewels. This find ignited the imagination of jewellers, who began creating archaeological-style pieces in homage to the treasures of antiquity.

The scarab motif—symbol of protection, renewal, and the eternal cycle of the sun—had been central to Egyptian belief since the earliest dynasties. To the Victorians, it embodied mystery, transformation, and the rediscovery of lost civilisations.
