Victorian Gold Snake Necklace
A striking 19th-century gold snake necklace, crafted in solid 9K gold, dating from around 1870. This dramatic design showcases a beautifully textured snake-link chain, named for its resemblance to a serpentās sinuous body, culminating in an ornate, sculptural head.
The snakeās ābrainā is formed from a large, wine-red garnet cabochon, richly domed and weighting 7cts. Two smaller garnet cabochons, with a slight purplish tint, are set as its piercing eyes. Surrounding the garnets is a delicate gold head with scroll motifs and sharp teeth.
The snake motif, popular in Victorian jewellery since Prince Albertās engagement ring to Queen Victoria, symbolised eternal love, rebirth, and wisdom. This piece combines those symbolic roots with a bold, tactile design that still feels strikingly modern.
The necklace weighs 19.15 grams and measures 36cm / 14ā in length (choker-style length). The snake head itself measures 2 x 1.5cm.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with surface wear consistent with age. The clasp is secure, and all stones are intact.
A rare and charismatic example of late 19th-century snake jewellery.
