Antique Enamelled Locket Ring

Antique Enamelled Locket Ring

An unusual and charming French locket ring dating to the early 19th century; made in Paris between 1819 and 1838 and struck with the French ‘ram’s head’ hallmark for 18K gold.

The oval head is set with a domed glass cover which lifts to reveal a tiny hidden compartment beneath – a true miniature locket. The glass has a subtle magnifying effect, drawing the eye to whatever token is placed inside; a sliver of paper, a lock of hair or perhaps a tiny painted fragment, as would have been the fashion at the time.

The shoulders are decorated with diagonal bands of rich red enamel, alternating with polished gold; traces suggest there may once have been a second enamel colour present. The enamel shows some expected losses from wear, but the overall effect remains vivid and full of character. The shank itself is slim and elegant, allowing the lively shoulders and secretive head to take centre stage.

  • French, Paris; c.1819–1838
  • Hallmarked with the French ram’s head for 18K gold
  • Glass-domed locket compartment, approx. 8 × 5mm
  • UK size P / US size 7.75
  • Weight 1.23g

Aside from the enamel wear noted, the ring is in very good condition for its age; the lid closes securely and the hidden compartment is perfectly usable. A rare survivor of the early 19th century taste for sentimental and secret jewellery; discreet on the hand yet wonderfully personal to the wearer.
