Edwardian Diamond Snake Ring

Edwardian Diamond Snake Ring

A striking and substantial Edwardian snake ring, crafted in Chester in 1913 and fully hallmarked for 18K gold. The ring is of impressive scale and weight, with a wide, boldly modelled hoop that gives excellent presence on the hand.

The design takes the form of a coiled serpent, its body articulated in smooth, polished gold and set along the spine with a graduated line of old cut diamonds. These continue towards the head, culminating in a larger central diamond forming the serpent’s ā€œbrainā€, measuring approximately 3mm in diameter.Ā

The band measures approximately 11mm wide at the back, offering substantial coverage and a confident silhouette. The interior is hand engraved with the date ā€˜25/9’, likely commemorating a significant personal event, a common and appealing feature of jewellery from this period. The maker’s mark ā€˜J.G’ is present, alongside the Chester assay mark and date letter for 1913.

Weighing a heavy 10.42 grams, this is a robust and wearable example of the enduring snake motif, a symbol of eternity, protection, and rebirth that remained popular well into the early 20th century.

Ring size UK V; US size 10.5.

Condition is excellent overall, with only light wear consistent with age.
