Vintage Amethyst Intaglio Ring

A striking vintage gold intaglio ring dating to around 1940.

The ring is set with a beautifully cut amethyst intaglio, carved with a delicate three-leafed plant, with a small monogram subtly engraved into one of the leaves. Intaglios are carved in reverse so they can be pressed into wax to seal letters or documents; a tradition that dates back thousands of years.

The design reflects the jewellery aesthetics of the 1940s, where earlier Art Deco geometry evolved into bolder, more sculptural forms. The mount is strong and architectural, with the intaglio slightly raised within the setting, giving the ring a confident presence that would make it particularly well suited as a statement pinky ring.

Crafted in 14K gold, the ring bears the French Saint-Jacques shell control mark, used to indicate imported 14K gold.
