Antique Sicilian Navicella Necklace
A charming 19th-century Sicilian ānavicellaā pendant necklace, crafted in solid 18K gold around 1860. The boat-shaped pendant is adorned with colourful polychrome enamel in pink and white Rococo-style motifs, set with ten bright turquoise cabochons with seed pearls. Originally worn as an earring, this piece has been elegantly converted into a necklace at a later date, preserving its historic charm.
Navicella jewellery, named after the Italian word for "little boat," was popular in Sicily and Naples during the Bourbon rule. The delicate dangles create movement, while the vibrant enamel and turquoise capture the lively aesthetic of the period.
Both pendant and chain are solid 18K gold, with the chain marked '750'. The necklace measures 40cm (16ā) in length, and the pendant is 2cm by 3cm. Weight: 4.92 grams.
Condition: Good overall, with minor enamel losses. Turquoise and pearls are securely set.
A beautiful example of Sicilian craftsmanship and colourful historic design.
