Antique Niello Silver Cycling Necklace

An unusual and striking antique French niello necklace, dating from around 1880. Originally an Albert chain for a pocket watch, today this piece would look fantastic worn around the neck, complete with a silver-plated cycling medallion, likely worn by a late 19th-century cycling enthusiast.

The necklace is crafted in solid .800 French silver, with a distinctive niello decoration; an ancient technique where blackened metal alloys are inlaid into engraved designs. This example showcases a bold striped niello pattern, creating a dramatic contrast with the silver and rose-gold-topped links.

The oversized spring clasp, figaro links, and cyclist medallion give this piece a unique character, making it a conversation starter. The pendant is marked ‘Depose,’ indicating a registered design, alongside an 'S&S' maker’s mark and an '800' silver stamp.

Measuring 46 cm (18 inches) with an additional 6.5 cm drop for the pendant, the necklace has a solid weight of 32.43 grams. The cycling medallion measures 3 cm in diameter.
