Belle Epoque Cherub Pendant

Belle Epoque Cherub Pendant

A beautifully detailed French devotional pendant from the Belle Epoque, c.1910, crafted in rich 18K gold and centred on a finely engraved mother-of-pearl cherub.

The tiny plaque shows a contemplative winged child in low relief, the iridescence of the shell giving the figure a soft, shifting glow as it moves in the light.

The mount is a quatrefoil shape; this four-lobed outline echoes Gothic window tracery and was long associated with churches, the four Evangelists and the idea of heavenly order.

Around the border runs a ring of raised ivy leaves. Ivy was a popular motif in late-19th and early-20th-century religious jewellery: as an evergreen that clings tightly to whatever it grows upon, it symbolised eternal life, fidelity and steadfast faith. On a cherub pendant it gently suggests the soul held fast in divine protection, loved and remembered even as earthly seasons change.

The reverse is left plain and smoothly polished, so it sits comfortably against the skin and could, if desired, be lightly engraved with initials or a date. The pendant bears the French eagle’s head hallmark for 18K gold.

Measuring approximately 25mm across and weighing 1.57g, it has a pleasing but delicate presence; enough detail to reward close inspection, yet light and easy to wear on a fine chain or as part of a layered necklace.

A striking fusion of Belle Epoque Art Nouveau ornament and quiet religious imagery; intimate, symbolic and very wearable.
