Indian Amethyst Deity Pendant

A rare and evocative Indian amethyst pendant, likely dating to the early 20th century, intricately carved and gem-set in 9K gold. The piece depicts a bearded male deity with strong facial features, stylised beard and moustache, and three gem-set eyes; two in ruby and one, the symbolic ‘third eye’, in sapphire.

The carving and iconography may allude to depictions of Shiva or to South Asian traditions of spiritual iconography centred on the ajna (third eye) chakra. Of particular note is the striking resemblance between this face and the famous “Priest-King” sculpture excavated at Mohenjodaro (now in Pakistan), the most iconic artefact of the Indus Valley civilisation (c. 2000–1900 BCE). Its stylised beard and composed expression echo the ancient prototype. 

The reverse of the pendant adds another layer of symbolism: an incised and enamelled ‘Tree of Life’ motif bearing sapphire leaves and natural pearls as fruit, set against the softly lavender-toned amethyst. This dual-sided design makes the pendant not only visually captivating but also richly symbolic, evoking themes of divine insight, continuity, and spiritual regeneration.

Crafted in 9K gold with a wide bezel and suspension loop. Some discolouration is present around the bail - a minor cosmetic issue not affecting the integrity of the gold.
